Pelvic Asymmetry: The Invisible Problem That Shapes Everything

Most riders assume their bodies are symmetrical. We look in the mirror and see two arms, two legs, two hips so the assumption feels reasonable. But functionally, it’s almost never true - we’re a sliding scale of symmetry. Humans are asymmetrical by design—handedness, foot dominance, visual dominance, and subtle differences in joint motion and tissue tone are the norm, not the exception.

A bicycle, however, is symmetrical. The saddle sits on the centerline. The cranks are the same length. The handlebars are equidistant from the frame’s midpoint. When a functionally asymmetrical rider mounts a symmetrical machine, the body must adapt—and it always does. The only question is how costly that adaptation becomes.

As Steve Hogg observed through decades of fit work, one of the most consequential and difficult asymmetries to manage on a bike is pelvic asymmetry of function. In fact, this is how we began our friendship back in 2006.

I had been fitting people, mostly in the sagittal plane for about 3 or 4 years when I started to see consistent patterns built around pelvic obliquities. I spent months searching for solutions, and honestly, information that might allow me to unsee what I was seeing. A former colleague from my adventure racing days emailed me his contact, and an article he had written recently on the topic - he was the only person in the world I could find that not only recognized the pattern, but had been exploring it for some time. The Pelvis as the Foundation

On a well-supported rider, the pelvis is the foundation of the cycling position. The sit bones bear weight efficiently, the torso balances above them, and the legs reach downward to generate force. When the pelvis is level and stable, each leg works through a similar plane of motion and the spine stays relatively centered. The arms share load evenly - and hopefully not much. Energy transfer is clean and efficient.

When the pelvis is not level—when one side shifts or rotates forward—the entire system reorganizes around that fault. One leg reaches farther than the other. The spine bends or rotates to compensate. One arm bears more weight. One shoulder rises. One knee tracks differently than the other.

None of this requires a measurable leg length discrepancy. Functional pelvic asymmetry alone is enough.

How Pelvic Asymmetry Shows Up on the Bike

Riders rarely describe pelvic asymmetry directly. Instead, they report symptoms that seem unrelated at first glance:

One “strong” leg and one “weak” leg. One sit bone that feels overloaded. Recurrent saddle sores on one side only. A hand that goes numb faster than the other. Neck or shoulder pain on one side. Low back pain that is clearly unilateral. A knee that wobbles or tracks inconsistently.

These are not isolated issues. They are expressions of the same underlying problem: the rider is not sitting squarely on the bike, even if it looks that way from the front.

Why Pelvic Asymmetry Is So Hard to Fix

Many asymmetries respond well to off-bike work—mobility training, postural awareness, strength development, and clinical bodywork. But as Steve Hogg noted, there is a significant group of riders who appear reasonably symmetrical off the bike yet consistently favor one side once they begin pedaling. This is where bike fitting becomes uniquely challenging.

The nervous system often has a preferred side for organizing movement under load. Under increasing intensity or fatigue, that preference becomes more pronounced. No amount of cueing or stretching can fully override it in the moment. That’s why some riders look “fine” at low intensity but unravel as effort rises.

The Cost of Ignoring It

When pelvic asymmetry is left unaddressed, the body finds ways to cope—but those strategies are expensive. The lumbar spine absorbs shear forces. The hips lose rotational freedom. One knee takes more load. One shoulder stabilizes more than it should.

Over time, efficiency drops, comfort erodes, and injury risk rises. Riders often chase these symptoms individually—adjusting cleats, changing saddles, raising or lowering bars—without ever addressing the foundation.

The goal is not perfect symmetry—few people have it. The goal is functional symmetry: minimizing the downstream cost of asymmetry so that load is shared as evenly as possible and movement remains controlled under fatigue.

That requires three things working together - not necessarily in order:

  1. Clinical bodywork to reduce protective tone, improve tissue glide, and restore available range.

  2. Functional movement training to teach the nervous system how to use that range under control.

  3. Bike fit solutions that respect how the rider actually bears weight, not how we wish they would.

In some cases, this includes subtle positional strategies that allow the rider to sit more centrally over the bike, even if the bike itself remains symmetrical. When done thoughtfully, these interventions can dramatically reduce compensatory patterns without forcing the body into a position it cannot sustain.

Why This Is Often the “Last Piece”

Many riders can improve dramatically with standard fit adjustments, movement work, and conditioning. Pelvic asymmetry tends to reveal itself when everything else has already been addressed—and something still doesn’t add up. That’s why it’s so often missed. And why, when it’s finally accounted for, the difference feels disproportionate.

Pedaling smooths out. Upper body tension drops. Saddle comfort improves. One-sided pain quiets down. Not because the rider was “fixed,” but because the system finally makes sense.

Pelvic asymmetry is common, subtle, and powerful. It shapes how force is produced, how load is distributed, and how fatigue accumulates—often without the rider realizing it. A symmetrical bike does not guarantee a symmetrical rider. In fact, quite the opposite.

When pelvic asymmetry is acknowledged and managed—through clinical insight, movement work, and thoughtful bike fit—the body stops fighting itself. Efficiency improves, comfort returns and riders gain something far more valuable than symmetry: control.
